It’s very secure and safe. So many retirees are still very vibrant and full of life and getting out and about and this village really allows that sort of lifestyle.
Residents – Aldersgate Court at Red Hill
Prominently located on the Red Hell ridge line, the original Aldersgate Court was one of Brisbane’s first high-rise retirement campuses, originally designed by our retired Director, Ian Fulton. 40 years later, the building was physically deteriorating but the sense of community remained strong with a dozen residents expressing commitment to the building.
We were able to guide our long-term client Wesley Mission Queensland through the difficult decision of whether to demolish or redevelop by referring to the original drawings and exploring the possibilities for their site. With a shared vision, significant materials were saved from demolition and the neglected building was transformed into a valuable community asset.
The challenge was to create larger apartments within the existing structure on a restricted site. The new plan converted 5 x 1 bedroom units per floor, to 2 x 2 and 3 bedroom units per floor, offering more choice to residents. The enclosure of the western balconies resulted in light filled and well-ventilated units with city views.
The inclusion of resort style, mixed-use spaces at street level, including a pool, outdoor covered BBQ area, library and gym, encourage residents to interact with each other and their visitors.
