St Catherine’s Aged Care Services, Marsfield is an seniors living community in the Northern Suburbs of Sydney. This project involved the refurbishment and reconfiguration of 2 of the existing communities on the site – the St Vincent Wing and the St Louise Wing. The existing spaces were not in keeping with the requirements of modern aged care. The key aim for this project was to provide additional space for the residents (including the provision of individual ensuites) while also refreshing the space to bring new life to the existing facility.

The St Louise wing is a dementia-specific unit and, as a result, significant care was required in the planning and selection of materials for these spaces.
The design carefully works within the restrictions of the existing building to expand the bedroom spaces for each resident and create social spaces that are open, inviting and filled with natural light.
The interior design for the project uses nostalgia and sensory activation to enhance the wellbeing of the residents. Nostalgia was used to create a sense of calm, comfort and security. The design textured materials and carefully selected colours for sensory activation to further support the maintenance and strengthening of neural pathways.
The result is that the spaces are bright, open and refreshing – a joyful new environment for the residents of St Catherine’s Aged Care Services.
