Fulton Trotter Architects were engaged to undertake a masterplan for the long-term development of this existing hospital facility. Through close consultation with the client, users and other stakeholders, a masterplan has been developed that seeks to create new clinical and support services for the site that support modern care standards as well as providing a functional and efficient plan that supports the operational needs of the users.
The planning seeks to re-orientate the site in order to improve the legibility and accessibility of the facility as well as its relationship to the Glen Innes town centre. The project will create a new Emergency Department, Imaging and Mortuary as well as a new Main Entrance for the hospital and associated support functions.
The building form is created as a simple skillion roof falling away from the existing building. This creates the extension as a new, modern form – contrasting with the adjacent existing building.

The core of the building is created as a box of lightweight cladding that uses jointing cover strips to create a simple texture to the material. Brickwork is used around the entry to the South – creating a material connection to the existing brickwork buildings on the site. The use of a lighter tone of brick gives the new facilities and a more contemporary feel – while also evoking the granite boulders and standing stones that are common in the Glen Innes region.
A feature ‘oculus’ skylight is created in the roof over the pedestrian entry, creating a warm and welcoming entrance to the facility and drawing natural light into the entry and the outdoor waiting area.
