Fulton Trotter Architects were commission by the Western NSW Local Health District to deliver a purpose-built facility for inpatient care to people with addiction issues. Located in a suburban development area outside of Dubbo the facility will provide a safe and supportive environment for people to develop skills to cope with and address underlying issues leading to their alcohol and other drug use in a structured residential setting.

Out of the stakeholder consultation process it became clear that the built facility needed to strike a balance between a residential and clinical feel. There was also a need to provide the necessary privacy whilst still facilitating connections to the wider context and community as residents go through their rehabilitation process. The design response was to separate the building into two wings and use the form of the building to create two separate and distinct landscape courtyards. Each wing of the building contains separate functions; one wing houses the communal and treatment spaces, and the other wing aiming to be more residential in nature includes the bedrooms and shared facilities.
By strategically balancing the separation of treatment and residential spaces, maximizing connection to nature whilst maintaining a level of privacy, and providing quality and comfortable spaces, the design creates the safe and supportive environment necessary for rehabilitation to occur.
