Cronulla High School is a co-educational secondary school for Years 7 to 12 in Sydney’s Greenhills Beach, Cronulla. The school has approximately 1,300 students and our project involved developing a masterplan to allow for the removal of demountable classrooms and adding learning areas to cater for the growth in student enrolments.

Fulton Trotter Architects was engaged by School Infrastructure NSW to develop a
masterplan for the development of the Cronulla High School site to deliver new teaching spaces and upgraded staff and administration spaces.

The planning for the project creates two new buildings that reinforce the existing courtyard arrangement of the site while also creating an increased street presence and a generous new entry forecourt.

The site is located in a historically significant area of Sydney and is also located on a narrow peninsular between the coastal beaches of Cronulla and the inlet of Woolooware Bay. The design for the site draws from these elements of the site’s coastal context, and the site’s Connection with Country, to create a culturally rich design outcome.

Fulton Trotter Architects understood a Connecting with Country process, working closely with the local community to embed design elements and artwork into the project to reflect Country and the setting of the area.  The design response included the incorporation of motifs within the brickwork and glazing on the project, use of native planting as well as the incorporation of artwork panels along the verandah spaces.  Fulton Trotter worked closely with the artists, Dennis and Vicki Golding, to incorporate the artwork into the building fabric.
