Fulton Trotter Architects started as a practice in 1946 and the very first project was Aramac Hospital followed by Barcaldine Hospital that was subject to more recent additions by FTA. Since that time FTA has had three generations of Directors / Partners involved with health care work. FTA worked with a large number of regional hospital boards over many years across regional Queensland.
This work has continued to this very day with the practice undertaking some complex commissions for Queensland Health. FTA was re-commissioned by Queensland Health in the 1990s to remodel and extend the original Barcaldine Hospital. During the 1990s FTA was involved in the redevelopment of Barcaldine, Clermont, Emerald and Maryborough Hospitals.
Today FTA works closely with Health Planner Kathy Roughan to deliver some innovative and exciting projects across the state. Our approach has been to work collaboratively along side the Health Services Planner from the start of the Health Service Planning process, through master planning and conceptual / schematic design. This way we get the best value from both the Health professionals, Health Planner and Architects every step of the design process.
In working with the Kathy Roughan, FTA has developed a design approach that gets the master planning right. This means full consideration of staging and de-canting, if necessary, along the way. Research is also undertaken of more recently constructed hospitals or community health centres to determine the best approach for the future and these investigations occur with the health professionals to give all stakeholders and understanding of what is best practice.
This approach was adopted with the design of the Browns Plains Community Health Centre where representatives from FTA toured Melbourne Health facilities with District representatives to look at improved delivery of health services. This tour had a profound effect on the design approach for this new facility.
All this innovation occurs while we maintain our thorough and detailed approach to documentation that has been a long tradition of the practice.
